Lightest panda born is in stable condition

The world’s lightest giant panda has been born in Chengdu, Sichuan province.

According to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a fema

le cub about the weight of an average chicken egg was born in the base on Tuesday.

Chengda, an eight-year-old female panda, gave birth to two female cubs that day.

“At 2:41 pm, Chengda gave birth to a female cub that weighed 171.9 gram

s. At 6:08 pm, it gave birth to the other female cub that weighed 42.8 grams, fewer than one

-quarter of the weight of its elder sister, and measuring only two-thirds as long, ” said base chief Zhang Zhihe.

Before Tuesday, the world’s lightest panda cub was Wuyi, a male pa

nda weighing 51 grams when it was born on Aug 7, 2006, in the Chengdu base.

Thanks to milk from two female pandas, Wuyi, whose name means 51 in Chinese, gained weight and by October he was as heavy as his peers.

“I think there are advantages and opportunities on b

oth sides if we can get people to sit down and really look at how do we put these pieces together,” Holden said.

He listed infrastructure, energy, education and business-to-business relationships as potential areas of coope

ration between China and the US, and he suggested such cooperation could start from subnational bilateral exchanges.

“It’s so important to be working at the state and local level. Because in that fashion, by buildin

g these relationships now, hopefully we get a more stable relationship nationally going forward,” said H

The spike in trade tensions has already rattled financial

markets. The yuan has weakened by 2 percent to its lowest level since January.

“We expect stock markets and the yuan to remain under pressure in the near term, though they c

ould be supported by an expected stabilization in the domestic economy later this year,” Wu said.

Sheng Songcheng, the former director of the Survey and Statistics Department in the Peo

ple’s Bank of China, said the truth is that imposing more tariffs on Chinese goods has not yet reduced US trade deficits.

The long-lasting US trade deficits in goods was formed from the US

dollar’s international status, its domestic low deposit rate and the US position in the glo

bal value chain, and those factors cannot be changed by protectionist measures, Sheng said.

Balancing growth with structural reformting perform

After a disappointing performance in 2018, China’s economy appears to be stabiliz

ing. In the first quarter of 2019, GDP growth, at 6.4 percent year-on-year, matched that of the previous quarter. But grow

th in industrial production exceeded expectations, expanding by 6.5 percent year-on-year (and by 8.5 percent in Mar

ch). Even exports growth was positive, albeit weak, despite the ongoing trade frictions with the United States.

Moreover, fixed-asset investment (FAI) grew by 6.3 percent-0.2 percentage points higher than in the previous quar

ter. Investment in real estate grew the fastest (11.8 percent), followed by manufacturing (4.6 percent) and in

frastructure (4.4 percent). The growth of investment both in real estate and infrastru

cture was stronger not only sequentially, but also year-on-year. As usual, consumption growth was stable.

hina, International Pavilion big expo drawsing distr

As landmarks of the International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 Beijing China, the China Pavilion and the Inter

national Pavilion are attracting large numbers of visitors thanks to their unique designs and functions.

Covering an area of 5 square kilometers, the expo is being held in the capital’s Yanqing district.

Following the ancient wisdom of the Chinese people, the China Pavilion takes the shape of a green b

uilding that can “breathe” and has “life”, as described on the exhibition’s official website.

Core portions of the pavilion are composed of terraced fields. Fun

ctions of both irrigation and insulation are at play, and th

e fields help reduce energy consumption of the building while also offering heating or cooling functions.

But by allowing Tsai Ing-wen, the island’s “pro-independe

ence” leader, to stop over in Hawaii on her way back to the island after an eight-day tour of thr

ee Pacific island nations this week, Washington is breaching all established protocols and violating the 1979

Joint Communiqué. Beijing lodged “stern representations” with Washington on Thursday against Tsai’s transit in Hawaii.

“We have consistently and resolutely opposed the United States or other countries which

have diplomatic relations with China arranging this kind of transit,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ge

ng Shuang said in Beijing. Beijing has urged Washington not to send “Taiwan independence forces any wrong signal”, Geng said.

The method behind fluctuating policy of US

When the US intends to maintain good relations with the mainland, it significantly reduces the

use of or even refrains from mentioning the Taiwan Relations Act. But when Washington wants to put pressure on Beijing to fina

lize a deal or sign a trade agreement in its favor, it promptly resorts to using the Act. At times, even the island’s a

uthorities stir up trouble, prompting the US to use the Act to try and browbeat or incite the mainland.

talian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has said he may sig

a series of memorandums of understanding on Belt and Road infrastructure investments during Xi’s upcoming visit to Italy, Reuters reported. If the

y are signed, Italy would be the first one of the Group of Seven industrialized nations to participate in the BRI.

Speaking at a news conference in Beijing on Wednesday, Vice-Foreign Mi

nister Wang Chao said the country appreciates Italy’s active involvement in the BRI.

”We believe the signing of relevant cooperation documents conforms to the common interests of both countries,” Wa

ng said, adding that Belt and Road cooperation aims to generate mutually beneficial and win-win results.

Regarding skepticism about the BRI, Wang said practice will prove that the initia

tive will have positive effects on countries’ economic development and bilateral cooperation.

He added that the infrastructure investment of Chinese companies in Europe is purely business practice and will ab

ide by market rules and business principles on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and transparency.

There’s been a lot of talk on Twitter, not just from racists

but also people who are very pro-Meghan, about recessive genes, about whether the baby will have an afro, whether the baby will have its mother’s nose,” she said.

”There’s all these coded conversations happening about what the baby will look like, and it sounds really horr

ible to think, but a lot of people offered up the idea that the blacker the baby looks, the worse its treatment will be.”

Hermansson said the anti-Meghan trolls have also seized on themes like so-called “cultural decline.”

”Meghan Markle fits into this bigger idea of the West and the UK in d

ecline,” he said. “She does that by not fitting in, by being who she is, which is mixed race. Pe

ople tie these things so much to what they think it means to be British, which is white. So, it has a racial element to it.”

”But there’s also this idea of cultural decline — [that] what we were before, a strong palace, a monarchy, an empire … is falli

ng apart, and that of course is brought on by these other far-right conspiratorial ideas, like what mass imm

igration is doing with our society, the replacement of British people of British culture.”

denounced May’s “disastrous” handling of Brexit, conde

mned the Conservative Party’s shift to the right and warned it was in danger of being taken over by extremists.

Their announcement was timed for maximum impact, dropping just before the weekly s

ession of Prime Minister’s Questions. In a move freighted with symbolism, the three ex-Conservative MPs

joined the eight former Labour lawmakers on the opposition benches in Parliament on Wednesday.

The move could mark the start of a reshaping of British politics as the clock continues to tick down to March 29, when the U

K is due to leave the European Union. With 37 days to go, Parliament has still not approved a Brexit deal.

In a joint letter to May, Heidi Allen, Anna Soubry and Sarah Wollaston blamed their departure on the government’s “dismal failure to stand up to

the hard line ERG [European research Group],” whose members advocate a no-deal Brexit. The three lawmakers, who have

been vocal anti-Brexit campaigners, said that Britain’s exit from the EU had “re-defined the Conservative Party — undoing all the efforts to modernize it.”

ending by banks surges in Januaryasures fend off nega

hina’s credit growth surged unexpectedly to a record pace in January, strengthening production in the real econo

my and easing overall downward pressure, People’s Bank of China, the country’s central bank, said on Friday.

Bank lending in domestic currency increased by 3.23 trillion yuan ($476.8 billion) last month, the fastest single-month growth

since the figure was first tracked in 1992. It increased by 2.9 trillion yuan in January 2018, the bank said.

Total social financing, a broader measure comprising all money the real economy receives from the fi

nancial sector, including off-balance-sheet financing activities, rose by 4.64 trillion yuan in Ja

nuary, which was also the fastest monthly growth ever, according to the central bank.

The month’s rapid credit growth was a result of a series of precauti

onary measures to ease the negative effects of slowing domestic demand and external h

eadwinds, according to Sun Guofeng, head of the bank’s monetary policy department, at a news conference.
